Bottled Mineral Water ContentFrom Magnesium to Uranium

It’s called mineral water after all. So we should, at the very least expect minerals to be in it, shouldn’t we?

Well, yes. But the next question is what kind of minerals can we expect? This took some doing, so I started with my favorite mineral water, San Pellegrino. It has a salty mineral taste that puts some people off, but if you want to drink bland water with no taste, why not stick to tap water?
Chlorine, flouride and industrial pollutants wash down without a trace of taste. This is not to say that bottled waters are necessarily free of problems, but just to point out that tap water has its own concerns.

San Pellegrino became especially attractive when I learned that it was a magnesium rich food, with over 53 milligrams of magnesium per liter. Magnesium regulates the bone structure, muscles and the nervous system. Each day comes out with previously unknown information about the profound effects magnesium has on our health. Magnesium deficiencies have been linked to early diabetes onset, ADD, autism, depression, impotence, heart attacks and many more problems. By comparison, Perrier has only 3.4 mg/l, while Evian has 24mg/l of magnesium. On the other had, Contrex water brings in 84mg/l of magnesium.

When we get over to calcium, Contrex comes out way ahead, with 486 mg. per liter calcium content. Calcium is essential for teeth, bones and even skin. The other waters follow, with Vittel providing 202 mg/l, San Pellegrino offering 181, Perrier at 147, and Evian at 78.

Sulfates have a laxative effect, so you’ll know when you’re getting too much by the frequency you need to rush to the toilet. Again Contrex comes in on top 1187 mg/l. San Pellegrino follows at 459. The rest are Vittel at 306, Perrier at 33 and Evian at 10.

Bicarbonate maintains the body’s pH balance, and neutralizes acid. Most mineral waters have plenty of this, with Contrex and Vittel both coming in at just over 400 mg. per litre. They are followed by Perrier at 390, Evian at 357, and San Pellegrino at 239.

Now, we move on to a metal that doesn’t often find its way onto labels. No, its not iron. That metal is uranium.
Generally, it is thought that 2 micrograms of uranium per day are safe for a child, maybe as many as 10 or 20 per
day for an adult – or as few as four. The effect of uranium in bottled water is hard to estimate, as no short term effects are
evident. Yet there is some suggestion that prolongued over-exposure may be harmful to the kidneys.

Tap water rarely has more than 2 micrograms per liter, though water that is sourced from an area that has a lot of granite or sedimentary rock may have more, as uranium is leeched from these sources. Perrier has 4 micrograms per litre and the uranium in San Pellegrino is 8 micrograms per liter. Evian and Contrex are between 1 and 2 micrograms, and Vittel is less than one microgram per liter. There is a medicinal water called Saratica that has 180 micrograms per litre, so you might want to think twice before downing too much of that!

In the end. Contrex comes out looking much better than San Pellegrino, and even offers more magnesium. So far as uranium, that is something worth considering. Keep in mind that the radioactivity of San Pellegrino is somewhat higher than the others as well.

Or, you could just get a decent home water filter…
